Are you planning to buy a car? If you’re, beside choosing a suitable car for yourself or your family, you need to get the right auto insurance for it. But aren’t all auto insurance the same? Certainly not! Here’s why……
1. Premium.
Does a cheaper insurance premium always provide lousy benefits as compared to an expensive one? What kind of premium can I expect for my type of car?
Well, to answer that, you can compare the rates by asking quotations from different insurer. Most insurers quoted the premium based upon:
i) Driver’s age.
ii) Driving experience and previous claim history.
iii) Type of automobile, its engine capacity and the car’s date of manufacturing.
iv) Type of coverage offered.
v) Other benefits and limitations.
Driver’s age.
Generally, driver’s below the age of 25, will be loaded with extra premium. Drivers in this age group, are deemed to be reckless and inexperienced. Statistic has shown that accidents happened more frquently among younger drivers. Younger drivers tend to speed more often to feel the ‘thrilled’ of speeding. Some may just like to ‘show off’ their driving skill.
Driving and previous claims experience.
Experienced drivers are able to assess the road traffic condition better. Their anticipation on situation helps them to avoid accidents by adopting a defensive driving strategy. Previous claims, if any, allows the insurer to assess the habit and character of the driver’s while driving.
Type of automobile, engine capacity and date of manufactured.
Driving a family car such as a sedan or a MPV can be considered as ‘normal’ driving as compared to driving a high performance car such as Subaru Imprezza or Porche 911. The capacity (cc) of the car also plays a part. Higher cc car tends to inflate the insurance premium as the cost of repairing goes inline with its capacity. The date of manufacturing dictates the lifespan of a car and its spare parts availability. For Japanese made car, spare parts availability is not a problem as most of the parts are interchangeable & adaptable with other Japanese car manufacturer.
Type of coverage offered.
For Auto Insurance, there are generally 3 types of coverages or plans.
Comprehensive Coverage - It covers damages to own vehicle and also third party vehicles. In an accident where you are at fault, all repair costs for your vehicle and that of a third party will be borne by the insurer. You just probably need to pay for the excess. Excess is the amount of money where car owner’s needs to fork-out before commencing of any repair works. This also applies to any medical attention arising in the future, involving all parties in the accident. Thus, the plan is the most expensive one.
Third Party Coverage - This plan is less expensive than the previous. However, any accident that you’d caused resulting in both your vehicle and third party vehicles damaged, the insurer will only pay for the repair and medical cost for the third party. You have to bear the damages to your vehicle, yourself.
Fire and Theft Coverage – As the name implies, only fire or theft that happen to your vehicle will be covered by the insurer. Due to limited coverage, this plan is unpopular among vehicle owners.
Other benefits and limitations
Besides the above factors listed, insurer’s also added other benefits to make their packages more interesting and well above their competitors. Some insurers that I know give life protection coverage, say 000. In the event where accident causes death or total and permanent disability to the insured drivers, a lump sum amount of 000 will be paid out the family from the Auto Insurer.
The insurer may also pay a fixed sum for ‘Loss of Income’ payment arising from the accidents for a stipulated period. This is apart from the medical claim that was mentioned earlier.
Some insurer provides windscreen cover free only on first claim. Others make it optional for vehicle owners with a minimum added premium. ‘Loss of usage’ benefit is another popular benefit for vehicle owners. As a result of accident, vehicle owner cannot use their car which is probably under repair. This benefit allows vehicle owner to rent a replacement car for a certain period while the damaged car in the workshop.
Most importantly, car owners should ask the insurer whether there is possibility of future premium ‘loadings’ if the damges were excessive. ‘Loading’ means additional premium added to a specific driver’s only, as a result of frequent claims occurrence or high repair cost or both. If that happens, car owner may find difficulty in insuring their car as data are shared among auto insurers.
Whatever your decision is, choose wise. Choose only what you need and not what you want. Remember, even if you’ve not made any claims for the past 5 years, premium of auto insurance can also still goes up due to other factors, not within your control.

2. Read the Scope of Coverage and identify similarities & differences.
3. Check the premium and your affordability. Do note that the most expensive premiums don’t always equate to the best coverage.
